HOW TO MAKE MUTTON PAAYA CURRY (ATTUKAAL PAAYA)

Mutton Paaya curry is a popular curry often served with string hoppers (idiyappam) or Paratha. It is slightly spicy and has a soup like consistency. This curry can be prepared in less than 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Paaya of 1 goat
4 tbsp oil
1 cardamom
1 cinnamon
1 onion finely chopped
1 tbsp garlic paste
1 tbsp ginger paste
1 ½ tsp red chilli powder
3 large tomatoes pureed
½ cup chopped coriander leaves
3 tbsp coconut paste
1 tsp salt
4 cups water

Method
  • Clean the paaya with a knife to remove hair or any impurities and wash several times with water.
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add cardamom, cinnamon and onions and saute till the onions turn golden.
  • Then add ginger and garlic paste and saute till the raw smell goes.
  • Add red chilli powder, tomatoes and cook till oil starts separating.
  • Now add the paaya, coriander leaves, coconut paste, salt and water.
  • Bring the gravy to a boil, close the lid and cook for about 15 minutes or 13 to 14 whistles.
  • Open the lid and check for taste. Add salt or pepper powder if necessary. Serve hot.
