Broken wheat upma is a healthy and nutritious dish that can be served for breakfast or as a snack. Potatoes, capsicums and tomatoes have been used in this recipe but you can add any vegetable of your choice.
Ingredients
1 ½ cups broken wheat
2 tbsp oil
¼ tsp mustard seeds
¼ tsp cumin seeds
¼ tsp asafoetida
1 onion chopped
8 to 10 curry leaves
2 tomatoes chopped
1 small capsicum cut into small pieces
1 potato cut into small cubes
1 tsp salt
1 tsp red chilli powder
¼ tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp pav bhaji masala
4 cups water
Method
- Heat oil in a non stick pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and allow the seeds to sputter.
- Then add onions, curry leaves and saute for a few minutes.
- When the onions turn golden, add potatoes and stir for about 5 minutes.
- Next add tomatoes. When the tomatoes turn soft, add capsicums and stir for a minute.
- Then add red chilli powder, salt, turmeric powder and pav bhaji masala.
- Mix all the masalas well and add broken wheat.
- Stir for a minute and add water. Mix well and bring it to a boil.
- Then reduce heat, close a lid and cook for 10 to 15 minutes till most of the water has evaporated and the broken wheat and potatoes are cooked.
- Serve the broken wheat upma hot with boiled eggs for breakfast.
