Dals like moong dal, chana dal and toor dal are a staple food in several Indian homes. They are a rich source of proteins, carbohydrates and fibre.
Dal chutney is a traditional recipe made using toor dal and is served with either rice or roti.
Ingredients
½ cup Toor dal (yellow pigeon peas)
1 tsp zeera (cumin seeds)
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp red chilli powder
2 large cloves of garlic
¼ tsp salt
1 ½ cups of water
2 tbsp Oil (or ghee)
½ tsp mustard seeds
A pinch of asafoetida
1 onion chopped
8 to 10 curry leaves
Method
Take Toor dal, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garlic, salt and water in a pressure cooker and cook for 10 minutes. (Increase or decrease red chilli powder and salt according to your preference). Allow the dal mix to cool down and grind it to a fine paste. Transfer this to a bowl and add water if necessary. Then heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow them to sputter. Now add curry leaves, onions and asafoetida. Once the onions turn slightly golden, add the seasoning to the dal mixture. Mix and serve.
