Horse gram or Kollu (in tamil) is a healthy and nutritious lentil rich in iron, protein and calcium. It is also recommended for people with diabetes and those who are obese. Horse gram is widely consumed in Tamil Nadu in the form of curries and soups. Horse gram can also be used to prepare a number of other dishes. Horse gram cutlet is one such snack. These cutlets are crunchy, flavourful and delicious. You can serve these cutlets as an appetizer or as a tea time snack.


1/2 cup Horse Gram
4 heaped tbsp Bread crumbs
2 tbsp Rice Flour
3/4 tsp Red Chilli powder
1 tsp Salt
3/4 tsp Garam Masala powder
1 Onion finely chopped
Oil for shallow frying


  • Soak the horse gram in water for half an hour.
  • Drain the excess water, and add the horse gram to a pressure cooker.
  • Add 2 cups water and pressure cook for 10 minutes or 3 whistles.
  • Open the lid and allow to cool.
  • Strain the liquid using a strainer and grind the horse gram to a fine paste adding just 2 tbsp water.
  • You can use the leftover horse gram stock to make soup.
  • Now take the horse gram paste in a bowl, add bread crumbs, rice flour, salt, red chilli powder, garam masala powder and onions and combine everything together to form a ball.
  • Now take small balls and make patties. Keep ready.
  • Heat oil in a non-stick pan, and shallow fry the patties till they turn golden brown in colour.
  • Transfer to a plate with tissue paper to absorb excess oil.
  • Serve hot with tomato ketchup.
