Moong dal khichdi is a healthy, delicious and comfort food that is often served for lunch with Toor dal sambar, or barbooth. At home we usually serve Moong dal Khichdi with Ande ka Barbooth (Eggs in tomato gravy) and mint chutney. The combination of plain khichdi with the slightly sour Barbooth tastes delicious.

Serves: 4

2 cups rice
1/4 cup yellow moong dal
3 tbsp oil
2 cardamom
2 cinnamon
1 onion thinly sliced
1/4 tsp ginger garlic paste
4 and 1/2 cups water
1 and 1/4 tsp salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
handful of chopped coriander and mint leaves

  • Wash and soak the rice and moong dal in water for about an hour.
  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add cardamoms, cinnamon and onions and saute till the onions turn golden.
  • Add ginger garlic paste and saute for few minutes till the raw smell goes.
  • Add water, turmeric powder and salt and bring to a boil.
  • Drain the water from the rice and moong dal and add the rice and moong dal to the cooker.
  • Add coriander and mint leaves and close the lid.
  • Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  • When all the steam has come out, open the lid and transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Serve hot.
