Vermicelli upma is an easy to make breakfast recipe that can be cooked in just about 15 minutes. You can make modifications to the recipe by adding carrots, capsicum, tomatoes, boiled potatoes, etc.


200 gms vermicelli 
1 tsp Salt
6 to 7 cups Water

4 tbsp oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
Handful of curry leaves
2 dry red chillies
2 onions finely chopped
Pinch of asafoetida
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp red chilli powder
½ tsp salt
3 eggs
2 tsp lemon juice


  • Boil water in a pan along with salt. When it starts boiling, add vermicelli and cook for about 10 minutes or till done. Drain the excess water using a sieve and keep ready.
  • While the vermicelli is getting cooked, heat oil in another pan, add mustard seeds and allow them to sputter. 
  • Next add onions and saute till the onions turn slightly golden. 
  • Then add asafoetida powder, dried red chillies and curry leaves.
  • After a few seconds add chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and eggs. 
  • Continue stirring till the eggs are cooked. 
  • Finally add lemon juice and boiled vermicelli and mix well.
  • Cook for 1 or 2 minutes. Switch off the gas, transfer to a serving bowl and serve hot.
