Hi friends welcome back to my blog. Hope you all are doing good. It had been several months since I read a book, and was looking for a good read. It was at this time I got my hands on the Book "The Silk Route Spy - The true story of an Indian Double agent" written by Enakshi Sengupta.
The name itself was intriguing and one morning after finishing my regular work, I sat on my couch with a cup of coffee in hand and started reading this book. As I read through the pages, I was transported to the Pre independence days and the life of people during that time.
As I read page after page, I started feeling like I was watching a spy movie. I literally could not put down the book. The book is based on a true story of a Spy who happens to be the grand father of the author's husband.
I was introduced to the main protagonist of the book Nandlal Kapur who lived in Firozpur in Punjab in the 1920s with his parents and siblings. He is a young man born in a normal Indian household with big dreams. He wishes to travel the world and earn money.
As flames of revolt are spreading across the country for a free India and ending the Colonial rule of the Britishers, Nandlal is recruited as a British spy. His main job is to spy on people and report information to his British bosses. His cover is that of a silk trader and he is taught all the nitty gritties of the trade.
The excitement the job gives and the money he makes makes him happy but deep down the patriot in him keeps questioning his job and how he can contribute to the country's freedom. He finally takes a call and decides to do his bit for the Independence of the country. He becomes a double agent.
How Nandlal juggles both these roles, how he manages to keep his real identity hidden, contribute to India's freedom movement all along passing information to his bosses without causing any harm to those fighting for the country's freedom form the rest of the story.
The author has written the book very well and her writing style is simple and captivating. In no page there is a dull moment.
The book was an eye opener to me. It not only showed the life of a spy through his perspective, his trials and tribulation, happiness and sadness; but also brought plenty of information on our country's freedom struggle. We have read so much in our history text books about our freedom struggle but this book took me to that era and made me feel the exact happenings up close and personal.
How several people fought for years, contributed their bit for the freedom struggle in whatever way they could and how we have achieved this freedom after so many hardships really made me value the freedom fighters a great deal more. There had been so many unsung heroes in our freedom struggle and Silk Route Spy was one among them.
In total this book is a wonderful read and if you are fond of reading fiction or historic fiction, then you should definitely not miss this book.
