Serves: 6

Ingredients

For the koftas

250 gms boneless chicken cut into small pieces
1 Big onion finely chopped
½ tsp garlic paste
½ tsp ginger paste
2 tomatoes pureed
¾ tsp red chilli powder
¾ tsp salt (or to taste)
100 gms roasted gram powder (or as needed)
1/2 tsp lemon juice
Coriander leaves

For the gravy

3 tbsp oil
2 cardamom
1 cinnamon
1 Big onion chopped
1 tbsp garlic paste
1 tbsp ginger paste
1 and 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
4 tomatoes pureed
½ cup curd
4 tbsp coconut paste
1 tsp salt (or to taste)
Coriander and mint leaves
½ lemon

Method

  • First we will prepare the koftas. For this grind the chicken pieces, onion and coriander leaves into a fine paste (Do not add water).
  • Then transfer to a bowl and add all the other ingredients for the Kofta/ meat balls, except gram flour and mix well.
  • Now add gram flour little by little. Stop adding gram flour when everything comes together and you are able to shape small soft balls.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Then take the kofta mixture, make small balls and drop it in the gravy (The koftas need not be very tough).
  • Fry in medium flame till the meat balls turn golden brown in color.
  • Transfer to a plate and keep ready. In the same way make remaining meat balls/ kofte. Keep ready.
  • Now to prepare the Kofta curry, heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cardamom, cinnamon and onions.
  • Saute till onions turn golden, then add garlic and ginger pastes.
  • Saute for a couple of minutes till the raw smell goes.
  • Next add red chilli powder, garam masala powder, salt and tomato puree. Mix well and cook for about 2 minutes.
  • Then add curd and coconut paste and mix well. There should be no lumps in the gravy.
  • Finally add coriander and mint leaves. Mix well and add 4 cups of water. Bring the curry to a boil.
  • Now add lemon juice and the fried Koftas and let it boil for a minute.
  • Then close a lid and let it cook in low flame for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Switch off the gas.
  • Transfer the Kofta curry to a serving bowl.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with  PulaoParatha or Naan.
