DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE

Hi all, today I am sharing a delicious recipe of Devil's food cake. Devils' food cake is a rich chocolate sponge cake made with cocoa powder with a dash of coffee to enhance its chocolatey taste. The Devil's food cake is an ultimate cake that you can make for birthday parties or any other special occasion or celebration.

So, lets move on to the recipe of making Devil's food cake at home. You can decorate it with chocolate whipped cream frosting, chocolate butter cream frosting or any other frosting of your choice. Here I have decorated the cake with chocolate and condensed milk butter cream frosting.

Ingredients required for making Devil's food cake

1 cup = 180 ml
Ingredients

1 and 1/2 cup All purpose flour/ Maida
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 and 1/4 cup powdered sugar (you can add 1/4 cup more if you like a more sweet taste)
1 tsp baking soda
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp vinegar
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp instant coffee powder
1/4 cup oil
1 tsp vanilla esence

For the Chocolate Condensed milk buttercream frosting (you can double the ingredients if you like more frosting on your cake)

50 gms unsalted butter
50 gms/ 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk (I used mithaimate)
1/2 tsp vanilla essence
1 tsp cocoa powder

Method

  • Take milk in a bowl, add vinegar and stir. Set aside for at least 10 minutes. We will get buttermilk.
  • Boil 1/2 cup water in a pan, add 1/2 tsp coffee powder and bring it to a boil. Switch off the flame and keep the brewed coffee ready.
  • When the coffee is hot, add cocoa powder and mix well such that the cocoa powder dissolves and you get a smooth paste.
  • Sieve together All purpose flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a bowl. Keep ready.
  • Preheat oven at 170 degree C for 10 minutes.
  • And grease and line a baking tray with parchment paper and keep ready.
  • Crack open the egg in another bowl and beat well.
  • Add oil, vanilla extract and cocoa-coffee paste into the beaten egg and whisk well.
  • Then add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk little by little and mix well such that there are no lumps.
  • You will get a slightly thick batter, not very thin and not very thick.
  • Pour the cake batter into the cake pan and then place the tray in the middle rack of the oven.
  • Bake at 170 degree C with only the lower rods for 25 to 30 minutes or till a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool down completely and run a knife around the edges.
  • Place a plate on top and invert the cake tray. The cake will fall on the plate. Remove the parchment paper and keep ready. Frost it with frosting, cut it into pieces and serve.

Method for making the Chocolate Condensed milk Buttercream frosting
  • While the cake is getting baked in the oven, we can prepare the frosting.
  • For this take, softened butter in a bowl, beat well till it turns soft and pale.
  • Then add cocoa powder, condensed milk and vanilla essence and beat well.
  • Check for taste, add more sweetened condensed milk or cocoa powder if you like.
  • Our frosting is now ready, we can decorate this over the cake once it cools down.
  • Here I have used a cake knife to spread the frosting over the cake.
I hope you liked the recipe and will try it out at home.
